Benedictine is a French liquor based on brandy and herbs, which has been produced since the 16th century. The original Benedictine recipe was created by a Benedictine monk named Dom Bernardo Vincelli, who lived in the Middle Ages. According to legend, Dom Bernardo would have created the liqueur to help treat the patients of the Abbey of Fécamp, in Normandy. The Benedictine recipe is kept secret, but we know that it includes 27 different plants and spices, which are macerated in Brandy for several months before being mixed with honey and sugar. The liqueur has an amber color and a soft and spicy flavor, which is due to the herbs and spices used in its preparation.
